OCCA Scholarships

Every year OCCA awards scholarship to high potential actuarial or math university students in Ontario that demonstrate interest in pursuing a career in property and casualty (P&C) insurance.

The OCCA Scholarship Program will award up to five $1,000 scholarships to students who are currently enrolled at a university in the province of Ontario, in an Actuarial Science program for the upcoming academic year.

Meet the 2026 Scholarship Recipients

Ashley Chan

Majoring in Actuarial Science and BBA. I’m interested in how the field combines problem-solving with real-world impact in managing risk and uncertainty. Through leadership roles with the UW Actuarial Science Club and ASNA, I aim to spread awareness and help build a strong actuarial community. Outside of academics, I love going on runs and playing soccer with friends!

Jack Van Milligen

Majoring in Actuarial Science and BBA. Throughout my experiences I have been fascinated by how actuarial science can help uncover results and conclusions that otherwise would not be clear. Along with this, I love how it allows me to join such a wonderful community of fellow students and colleagues. In my free time I enjoy camping and playing intramural sports

University of Waterloo/Laurier, 3rd year student

Majoring in Economics. I am motivated by the intersection of climate improvement and actuarial science. As Co-Founder of Guelph’s Actuarial Science Club, I am inspired by its members, who make studying for exams easier and push me to continue building communities wherever I go. In my free time, I enjoy canoeing, fishing, and listening to music. energy to the room.

John Dowdall

Majoring in Actuarial Science and Statistics. I am actively engaged in the actuarial community, supporting students in their professional journeys as the CAS Student Ambassador at the University of Waterloo. I am particularly interested in applying quantitative skills to solve emerging risk and financial challenges. In my free time, I enjoy weightlifting, bartending, making desserts, and playing badminton.

University of Waterloo, 4th year student

Jonathan Lo

Majoring in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics. The use of mathematics and statistics to predict future events is what first drew me to actuarial science. Having personally experienced the 2024 Jasper wildfire evacuation, I am particularly interested in the use of catastrophe modelling and risk mitigation to keep insurance affordable as climate risks grow more complex. I enjoy reading, hiking, and travelling, especially throughout Canada.
